Come to the Vaňkovka Gallery to remember the past with the Brno Municipal Museum and to enrich your knowledge of your city.
From 15th to 30th September, the Vaňkovka Gallery will travel in time with you to show you the era of the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the World War I. and the first years of Czechoslovakia.
The exhibition called The Big Brno was created in cooperation with the Brno Municipal Museum. The exhibition maps the period of great prosperity of Brno in the last third of the 19th century and in the first third of the 20th century using texts, photographs and unique exhibits; the entire period peaked in 1919, when 23 municipalities including two towns (Královo Pole and Husovice) joined Brno. The city area then increased from 1 816 ha to 12 380 ha and the population increased to 221 758.
The exhibition explores the Brno city life before, during and after the World War I. Visitors can look forward to lots of information, photographs, maps and historical documents, but also to 3D exhibits from the Brno Municipal Museum depository showing e.g. contemporary fashion, furniture or toys.
In the Vaňkovka Gallery, a little show will be set up from the beginning of last century as well as a café and wide range of interactive exhibits for children. Apart from other things, children will try to wash laundry using a washboard, they will play popular children games from the past, they will be able to peg in some nails into a commemorative column which reminds the ancient tradition of Brno journeymen, or they can have their picture taken at photographic walls with historical views.
